I am big fan of organizations and sites that work to provide micro-finance (small loans) to deserving entrepreneurs in disadvantaged areas, like developing nations or enterprise zones within the US. Yes, these loans are not perfect and the administration costs/burden can be larger than expected, but I am convinced the gain is much greater than the risks.
One of my favorite organizations/sites is Kiva (www.Kiva.org). They have been growing steadily and done great work. I have used their site to make holiday gifts to families, friends, and kids.
