Holiday Letter – 1998

In 1990s by Steve Sliwa

December 1998

Dearest Friends and Family,

After 7 years in Florida, we have finally made a “paradigm shift” in many aspects of our lives, including a new address. As you can see from the postmark, we now hail from West Hartford, Connecticut, as Steve has made a job change. His seven years at Embry-Riddle have been very fruitful in many ways. He consolidated and expanded the physical facilities, more than doubling the square footage. He substantially increased the market position of Embry-Riddle, as well as the endowed scholarship funds and annual giving. He also improved the working and living conditions of both staff and students. We are very proud of the legacy he left at ERAU.

However, a new challenge was offered to truly make a difference in a completely different arena. In August, Steve became President and CEO of Colt’s Manufacturing Company. One of his major challenges is to bring to market “smart gun” technology. This technology would prevent a gun being fired by anyone other than the person to which the gun is “keyed.” This technology has the potential to save innumerable lives, yet faces many practical and political obstacles. It proved an irresistible challenge to Steve.

In anticipation of this family move, Nancy had been preparing WebAdept for sale since early 1998. Its purchase was completed in September. She is now able to focus on her Nikken activities full-time, which has been her goal since she began working with this company last year. She achieved the rank of Silver in July, and her income is steadily growing. She loves working with the unique technologies, helping people have better quality of life, accelerating her own personal development, and enjoying the wonderful travel benefits! In October she was able to spend an incredible week sightseeing in Japan as part of the Nikken World Convention. Now that she’s Silver and qualifies as an International Distributor, she’s looking forward to even more exotic travel. She and Steve hope to combine business trips and actually spend some vacation time together! (Unbelievable, isn’t it?)

Steve and Nancy’s flying activities were somewhat curtailed this year due to the other massive changes in their lives. However, Nancy was able to support the Great Southern Air Race as a judge in Freeport, and attended the Oshkosh Air Show, spending time with her good friends Marcie Smith and Nancy Rodgers from California. Steve’s flying-related energy was focused on acquiring a new ASW-27 racing sailplane fresh from the factory in Germany. The import paperwork and aircraft certification were daunting, but finally accomplished in time for Steve to fly his new baby before leaving Florida. 1ER (competition designation SMS) is still sitting in our hangar in Spruce Creek, waiting to be flown during our periodic visits back there. We hope eventually to move it to the Minden, Nevada area. Steve plans to participate in some sailplane competitions next year.

Simultaneous to our relocation, Tabitha has made some major changes as well. She left her job in Berkeley with JN4D, the software company, and moved to Los Angeles. She is working for E! Entertainment as a production assistant, and taking certification classes for holistic massage. While she doesn’t care for L.A. as a long-term residence, she is very excited about her career change, and is even anticipating incorporating Nikken into her future massage business. She and Nancy plan to attend a Nikken Expo together in Anaheim in January so Tabitha can learn more about the technology and business operations.

Honey, Chandelle, and Casper are slowly adjusting to their new home in Connecticut. The dogs particularly miss the pool in Florida, but were happy chasing squirrels among the beautiful fall foliage and crisp temperatures of our new home. Casper is slowly coming to terms with the neighboring cats, and loves sitting on his window perch to watch their comings and goings. No snow yet, but Casper and Chandelle should see their first ever this winter!
